Center City Market

Center City Market in City Heights, San Diego is located right across from the East African Gathering Place. UC San Diego Center for Community Health has been working with local markets for the past several years through their Live Well Community Market program which is a project funded by the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency. The main goal of the Live Well Community Market is to improve and promote access to healthy foods by working with small community neighborhood markets.

Part of this work includes working with markets on the interior and exterior redesign, renovation and reorganization to visually and physically enhance the experience for the customer and better serve their community of local shoppers. Studio Nectary has been working with the UCSD Center for Community Health since 2016 as a designer, community facilitator support, and project coordinator on their market programs. For Center City Market we worked with the UCSD CCH team and market owner, Omar Hussein, to add more visibility to the storefront and delineate parking from pedestrian spaces. With a tight timeline and the power of 50 volunteers, we accomplished a major renovation in a short amount of time.

The design work and material costs for this project were funded by the University of California Global Food Initiative.
