Finney Child Development Center

“The Children’s Garden” is the new CDA Finney Child Development Center outdoor classroom. This garden was designed to maximize the small space and provide a place for the students, teachers, staff and parents to learn, explore and relax in nature.

Studio Nectary’s role was lead designer and project manager (while a contracted designer and project manager for Rooted In Place). We worked with the teachers and staff to gather input on how they imagine using the yard and how it would benefit their programs. Growing food and having a quiet place for the teachers were at the top of the list. We implemented raised beds for growing vegetables, refreshed the existing fruit trees in the yard, built a work table and outdoor classroom for hands-on learning and were even able to create a quiet space for teachers to recharge.

The final touches were completed on September 30, 2016, through a volunteer workday with dedicated parents, teachers and staff to add the final touches and pops of color. This outdoor classroom will help young children attending the preschool to learn through nature and art.
