Rema Halal

Rema Halal Foods is another market that participated in the Live Well Community Market Program, led by UCSD Center for Community Health. For over a year, they worked together to improve and promote access to healthy food at the market. Studio Nectary’s role was to support their efforts as a community facilitator support, designer and project coordinator (while a contracted designer and project manager for Rooted In Place).

The design portion of the project was guided by a community visioning meeting which included local stakeholders and shoppers and the building owner, who all provided input to include more cultural and social gathering elements for the business plaza and to benefit the nearby residential neighborhood.

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, alongside Alaa Alsadoon, owner of Rema Halal Foods, and 75 volunteers, we worked together to renovate the exterior of the market. The goal of this project was to lead a community engaged process that supported and informed improvements needed to the market’s interior and exterior in order to attract more shoppers, improve and promote access to affordable healthy foods, and build on existing economic development activities in the City of El Cajon.
